As you might expect, Mick McCarthy is pretty sick of talking about Saipan, and his infamous row with Roy Keane at the 2002 World Cup.

The former Ireland manager fell out with his then captain, and sent him home from the tournament, which caused a media storm that has never fully went away.

Now actor and director Steve Coogan is playing McCarthy in a new movie on the whole saga, so it is being brought up again, whether the former Wolves manager likes it or not.

Speaking on the Under The Cosh Podcast, the ex Ireland boss was in good spirits, and when asked if he would do anything differently in management, he dropped a brilliant Saipan one-liner.

"I probably would have got a better pitch in Saipan."

The panel erupted with laughter, but McCarthy also explained that he isn't particularly fussed on discussing the matter.

"In our family, we have a thing - whoever has brought it up, like the kids, who are all grown up, and if anybody mentions it, we have this award.

"The award for bringing it up is 'The Dick of The Day'."

On the movie being made the former Premier League manager accepted that it was going to get made regardless of what he did or said.

Coogan actually rang McCarthy, to try and get his side of the story, so he could portray the character as accurately as possible.

“I was a bit disappointed (it was Coogan), I was looking for George Clooney or Brad Pitt…Denzel Washington he should play me.

“I spoke to him, to be fair to Steve, he wants to portray how it was for me and not just the script, which fair dues to him. I suppose they’ve given Roy the same opportunity to speak to his actor, who I’ve seen a few things by the way and he’s brilliant.

“I thought Steve Coogan’s going to play me, I’ve got no axe to grind with him, he’ll have a script but he may as well hear how it was for me.

“It could be a Baby Reindeer this one, I could be suing Netflix, it’s not on Netflix is it? Or any other TV companies that might be involved.

“A big £20 million lawsuit, (although) I doubt it very much.”

The movie began filming in Autumn, and is due to hit the big screen next summer.
