Former Coventry and Newcastle United striker, and Republic of Ireland international, Leon Best has endured a difficult few seasons since he left Newcastle in 2012.
A three-year stint at Blackburn where he featured just 13 times was ended in 2015, and Best has played for four teams in the two years since without amassing more than 15 appearances for any of them.
It appeared as though his luck may be about to turn around when Mick McCarthy liked what he saw after inviting Best on trial for two weeks back in August at the start of the season, but today it emerged that the former Ireland boss is not happy with what he has seen since the contract was signed.
Leon Best made 12 appearances for Ipswich, the last of which came against Lincoln City in the FA Cup, and we know that it was his last because McCarthy confirmed as much when speaking to the press on Thursday.
I’ve told him he won’t play again for me.
He came in, trained well for two weeks and really impressed everyone. It was a case of right place, right time for him, but he’s not done it since.
I’m sure Leon has a different view, but it’s my view that counts. I decided after that Lincoln game that was it.
Brutally honest from Mick there.
Best was capped seven times by Ireland although he didn't manage to bag an international goal, but now he must once again find a new club after playing for Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, Brighton, Rotherham, and Ipswich since 2014.
Perhaps a change of scene away from the Championship is needed to get a run of games and to get himself back in the goals, but at 30 years of age you'd have to feel he's got something left to offer at some level or another.
