The news that Mick McCarthy has taken the Ireland job until the 2020 European Championships has seen an unprecedented rise in the use of gifs containing the former Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich coach.
The 59-year-old returns to the Ireland hot seat for the second time as he takes over from Martin O'Neill, 16 years after leaving the position following a poor start to the team's Euro 2004 qualification campaign, and upon the announcement of the decision to rehire McCarthy, the internet has been awash with short meme-able clips of the former Ireland international.
It is believed that McCarthy's meme-ability was a key factor in the FAI choosing him over Stephen Kenny, though the former Dundalk Town manager will be given time to hone his tea making, as well as his knowing look to camera with the Ireland U-21 team over the next two years, before he makes the step up to senior international management.
The use of Mick McCarthy gifs shows no signs of abating, and scientists are predicting that the use of the gifs will incrementally rise, and may well break the internet should the Ireland team qualify for the Euros.
