It's over three years since Michu's debut season for Swansea - one in which he scored 22 goals.
In the interim, he fell down the leagues due to an ankle injury. He played in the fourth tier of Spanish football with UP Langreo, a club managed by his brother.
In an interview with FIFA TV earlier this year, the Spaniard explained the situation.
It was my right ankle. I started to have almost overnight during my second year at Swansea. I've had loads of treatment and countless operations but I've never managed to fully recover.
On Thursday night, Michu made his return to professional football. It was also his second debut for Real Oviedo where he began his career as a young player.
In a Copa del Rey tie against UCAM Murcia, Michu scored twice. His goals came late in the game with Oviedo 3-1 down. His second was a late equaliser which sent the game to extra time.
It was not to be a fairytale return for the 30-year-old as Murcia got the winner 10 minutes from the end of extra time.
