Liverpool have been in scintillating form as of late, with defender Virgil van Dijk right at the centre of that.
The Dutchman was not quite performing at his peak earlier in the season, something that was completely understandable when you consider that he had just returned from a serious knee injury. However, he has really stepped things up over the last couple of months.
The 30-year old has been racking up man-of-the-match honours, most notably in the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League victory at Inter Milan.
He also broke an astounding record yesterday in the 1-0 victory over West Ham. That result meant that van Dijk has now gone 60 league games undefeated as a Liverpool player at Anfield, a Premier League record for a home player at a given stadium.
As if it was needed after his long injury layoff, the centre back has certainly reminded everyone why he is considered the best around in that position.
Michael Owen labels Virgil van Dijk as the best defender he's ever seen
Speaking to Premier League Productions, Michael Owen even went as far as to say that Virgil van Dijk is the best defender that he has ever seen.
He plays in second gear and it’s too easy for him. The game is easy for him.
I will go one step further. I have never ever seen, in my lifetime, I don’t think I have seen a better defender. I have played against some great defenders. I don’t see what he can’t do.
He is lightning fast. Brilliant on the ball. Scores goals. A beast in the air. He reads the game. A leader. I don’t know what he doesn’t do.
If I think back at all the greats, Marcel Desailly was the best defender I played against. The likes of Rio (Ferdinand) and John Terry. Real Rolls-Royce.
Then you go into some of the best defenders. I don’t think I have seen a better defender. He could be one of the greatest of all time.
Van Dijk is certainly one of the best defenders we have seen in the Premier League, with few others being able to match the impact he has had at Liverpool.
Whether he is better than all those other names mentioned will certainly cause plenty of debate.
