Michael Obafemi has brought to an end speculation over his international future by committing to the Republic of Ireland.

The Southampton forward, who is also eligible to play for Nigeria and England, is part of Martin O'Neill's squad to face Northern Ireland at the Aviva this evening.

However, there did appear that there was some uncertainty as to whether Obafemi was committed to Ireland in the long-term.

Any uncertainty has now gone. Playerworks CSM, the agency that represents Obafemi, releasing this statement on his behalf:

Due to current speculation surrounding Michael Obafemi and as Michael's representatives, we would like to go on record to say that we are not in talks with either Nigeria or England, nor is it something we have ever pursued.

Since Mark O'Toole spotted Michael early on, he, along with the other staff at Ireland, have given Michael a great opportunity, which he has enjoyed immensely.

Michael was born in Ireland, so this is the country he naturally wants to play for.

Martin O'Neill has shown great faith in Michael and he wants to repay that faith by helping the team achieve success. Michael is 100 per cent committed to Ireland and is looking forward to an exciting future with the national team.

Martin O'Neill had been coy on the player's future this week, saying he that there was "no real pressure on him to make that decision in the next couple of days."

The player himself soon took to Twitter to confirm the news.

With any doubts eradicated about Obafemi's intentions, we can now enjoy watching the player in a green jersey. He has made great strides this season for Southampton, with the faith being exhibited by Mark Hughes in the youngster a rarity for a side in their precarious position.
