One of the best images to come out of one of the more memorable nights in the history of Irish football was the man who stole the show that night, big Jon Walters, sharing a selfie with the universally loved president of Ireland in the changing room after the match:
Not one for selfies after games but you can't miss one with the president Michael D Higgins ☘☘ have a bit of that! pic.twitter.com/R2EeobeEZZ

Michael D Higgins is a lovely man, and while talking to Liam Mackey of the Irish Examiner he explained why he had to make an exception to the rules in order to secure that photo with Ireland's match-winner.
That was a total exception because I’m not allowed to take selfies. As it happened, there was more than one but that was the one that got out. The other John, John O’Shea, was involved too. There was a great atmosphere in there.
Walters getting his pal in trouble by posting it to twitter, shocking.
Michael D didn't mind though, and that's because he loves the Irish football team, further evidenced by his decision to invite some of the Irish players to Windsor Castle during an historic state visit in 2014:
Seamus Coleman came. He got permission from the (Everton) manager to break training at lunchtime, legged it down to London, hired the suit and so forth, and I introduced him to the Duke of Edinburgh as the defender who had the highest number of goals of that season so far.
It's mad to think that the president of Ireland is not allowed to take selfies, but thankfully that exception was allowed.
