The scene of Roy Keane roasting Micah Richards for claiming he "burst onto the scene" is an iconic part of the ex-Manchester City man's punditry career.

As funny as the clip is, it does not do justice to some of the impressive feats achieved by the Englishman early in his career, before he - by his own admission - failed to kick on from a promising start.

At the age of only 19, Richards was trusted as Manchester City's vice-captain for the 2007-08 season under Sven-Goran Eriksson, with Irishman Richard Dunne wearing the captain's armband.

Richards was part of the BBC's punditry panel pre-match for the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, alongside Peter Schmeichel, Alan Shearer, and Gary Lineker.

At the programme's opening, Richards made an apology to Schmeichel for an incident involving his son Kasper during that 2007-08 season - before proceeding to throw his captain Dunne under the bus.

The 2007-08 season at Manchester City was the last before the arrival of investment from Abu Dhabi, which has revolutionised the club and brought them to the very top of the English and European game.

Very few of the players involved in that 2008 season would remain at City long enough to reap the rewards of the club's newfound success - but two of those were Micah Richards and Joe Hart.

Appearing on the BBC ahead of the FA Cup final, Richards turned to ex-City 'keeper Peter Schmeichel to apologise for an incident during that season when he told manager Sven-Goran Eriksson to pick Hart rather than Schmeichel's son Kasper.

However, Richards had an asterisk to add to his apology.

He stated that Eriksson had trusted him with his opinion due to his position as vice-captain - before suggesting that the blame should actually lie with skipper Richard Dunne:

It's not just you, Peter, it's to Kasper and all the Schmeichels.

It's an apology.

Many moons ago, under Sven Goran-Eriksson, your son played with me at Manchester City. Joe Hart was there also. Sven pulls us into his office and says he doesn't really know who to play out of Kasper and Joe.

Obviously, I was friendlier with Joe, so I picked Joe Hart.

But I wasn't the captain, it wasn't just me! I was only the vice-captain, Richard Dunne made the call.

Both Richards and Hart would go on to win Premier League crowns with Manchester City - but, as host Gary Lineker pointed out, Schmeichel did not do too badly after being frozen out of the City team.

The arrival of Shay Given at City the following season only pushed Schmeichel further down the pecking order. Schmeichel left City in 2009 for Notts County, before he eventually ended up at Leicester City in 2011.

At Leicester, Schmeichel was a part of the immortal 2016 title-winning team, and also won the 2021 FA Cup.

We imagine he might forgive Micah Richards (or, rather, Richard Dunne) for his 2008 advice to Sven-Goran Eriksson.
