You think he's done it all, then the little wizard goes and pulls another sublime rabbit out of his hat.
It wasn't a vintage performance from Barcelona by any stretch of the imagination away to Villarreal, and it looked like they would be surrendering even more points to Real Madrid in a title race they look less and less likely to win - in third, a point behind Sevilla, they are five behind Madrid with an additional game played.
As it turns out, they did drop points, but only two thanks to the magic of Messi.
Most football fans have at one stage or another vanished into a Youtube black hole watching the countless videos combining Messi's individual moments of brilliance, and now this free-kick can be added to the list.
Note how the Villarreal goalkeeper, Sergio Asenjo, moves a step to his left - convinced that he's got his right hand side of the net covered, and that there's no way Messi will be able to squeeze the ball into that space, or have the audacity to try.
That's where he was wrong.
