Steve McNulty is a serious unit, a serious defender and now playing in the big leagues after his Luton Town team were promoted out of the Conference Premier last night following a Cambridge United loss. We could all learn a thing or two from this man.

The big man is a non-league's stalwart, having started at Liverpool, and boy can he play ball:

And score the odd wondergoal:

The description for his style of play on Wikipedia says more than we could ever hope to get across:

McNulty has been described as a "garbage" centre-forward who is noted for his aerial ability. As a graduate of the Liverpool Academy, which preaches technique, attitude, balance and speed, McNulty primarily passes the ball along the ground, often beginning his team's attacking movements as a result. Luton manager John Still has called McNulty "one of the best passers of the ball I've seen at [Conference Premier] level".

McNulty's leadership is also notable; he captained the Liverpool under-19 side, and won promotions while captaining both Barrow and Fleetwood Town. His Luton teammate Alex Lacey has stated that McNulty is "a real leader" with strong communication skills, while John Still credited him for improving the performances of the whole team.

Nicknamed "the Scouse Beckenbauer", McNulty's technical ability, unusual both for a defender and a player in a lower-tier league, is also a result of his footballing education at Liverpool. His first-touch, calmness on the ball and flair have been praised; he often performs feints and drag-backs to foil opposition attackers, as well as Cruyff Turns.
