Andrew Watson, believed by most to be the first black man to play football, won his first cap for Scotland on March 12, 1881, captaining Scotland against England. According to Wikipedia, 'he later studied natural philosophy, mathematics and engineering at University of Glasgow when he was 19, where his love of football blossomed.'
