Ajax captured are the talk of the footballing world at the moment, producing a jaw-dropping team performance in the win over Real Madrid in midweek.

While there are a number of fantastic young players in their team, the side is built around a pair of academy products in Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt. At the ages of 21 and 19 respectively, they look set to dominate European football for a number of years to come.

Unfortunately for Ajax, that won't happen in Amsterdam, as De Jong has already agreed to a summer transfer to Barcelona. The Spanish club are also favourites to sign his teammate, but De Ligt seems to be open to a number of possibilities.

One of those would be to join Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool. The pair have formed a formidable partnership in the centre of defence for the Dutch national team, and the youngster says he is open to continuing it at club level.

Virgil (van Dijk) is a player who has experience in the top leagues.

Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.

It could happen (De Ligt joining him at Liverpool). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them. I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up.

This of course will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans. Even though they have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season, they could use another central defender in the squad. Joe Gomez has a torrid injury record, while Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren may not be good enough for a top level team.

Potential recruits don't get much more exciting than De Ligt, one of the brightest prospects in that position in many years. He would not come cheap, but Liverpool would no doubt be willing to stump up for the transfer fee if De Ligt confirmed his desire to move to Anfield.
