Matt Doherty said Monday night against Everton was a display of why he's at Spurs.

The Ireland international set up two goals for Harry Kane with superb passes as Spurs won 5-0, and the England international moved above Thierry Henry in the all-time Premier League scorers' list.

"A great ball from Doughie (Matt Doherty), and I was sent in one-on-one with Jordan Pickford, and I always back myself,” Kane told Sky Sports about his first goal in the 37th minute to make it 3-0.

"As I was coming back, Pickers said I was offside. But it was a great ball in from Doughie and a fantastic night to finish it off."

Kane scored his second, his 176th Premier League goal, in the 55th minute after he was found by an excellent ball over the Everton defence from Doherty.

"Doughie played a great ball into me," said Kane.

"It was played over my shoulder to my left foot and sometimes you take it on left foot and it comes off. It was a really nice finish and I’m glad it went in."

Spurs manager Antonio Conte said after the game that "Doherty is another player who I'd like to underline the improvement [in]."

Monday night was the first time Doherty has started consecutive Premier League matches since Jose Mourinho, the manager who brought him to the club in the summer of 2020, was in charge. In the 4-0 victory against Leeds late last month, Doherty scored the opening goal and set one up for Dejan Kulusevski.

"Obviously, that's the position I love," Doherty said about playing at right wing-back.

"That's the reason why I'm at Tottenham. I was playing in that position at Wolves. I was managing to get in at the back stick, create chances and score goals. Hopefully, I can keep it up.

"That's the kind of thing we need to do: start fast. That's exactly what we did. We were just clinical in front of goal like were against Leeds, finishing off the chances that we had. We pretty much killed the game in the first half.

"When we had the opportunity to slide somebody in or make a great chance, we pretty much took it. I don't think they created too much. On both ends of the pitch, we were pretty solid."
