Matt Doherty had a day to remember against Leeds on Saturday. The Dubliner scored his first goal for Spurs after almost two years at the club, and followed that up with an assist for Dejan Kulusevski mere moments later.

The Irish right-back has struggled since moving to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2020, and will hope that the game against Leeds presents a new dawn for him. A clean sheet in a 4-0 win was the icing on the cake for Doherty.

His teammate Son Heung-Min scored his tenth goal of the season in Spurs' dominant win over a struggling Leeds. Interviewed by BT Sport after the game, Son showed a lot of love for Doherty, and said that his performance was one of a player that his teammates had been waiting to see.

Matt Doherty: Son Heung-Min heaps praise on Irish teammate

Matt Doherty's form for Spurs and his form for Ireland have told very different stories since his arrival in North London.

One of the most important members of Stephen Kenny's Irish side, Doherty has struggled to make the expected impact at Spurs. He put in arguably his best performance yet in a Spurs shirt on Saturday afternoon at Leeds.

After a tidy finish for Spurs' opener, an assist for Dejan Kulusevski, and a clean sheet, Doherty was praised by his teammate Son Heung-Min in the Korean's post-match interview. Son said that he was thrilled for Doherty, and said that the Irishman "deserved" a goal and a good performance.

I'm very happy for him. He had a tough time, but I always talk about him deserving a goal and a good game.

Today, he showed what kind of player he can be, how he can help the team. I'm very, very happy for him and I hope he can continue to work like this and help the team.

You can hear the quotes from Son on Matt Doherty from about 1:20 in the below video.

With stiff competition from Emerson Royal and Japhet Tanganga for Spurs' starting right-back slot, a performance like that against Leeds on Saturday can only be good news for Matt Doherty.

Irish fans will be hoping he kicks on and makes the slot in the starting 11 his own.
