A Matt Doherty goal topped off his fine start to the Premier League season this afternoon. Scoring his first for Wolves in the English top flight, it was enough to assure Irish fans the full-back must make his international breakthrough sooner rather than later.
Travelling to Selhurst Park this afternoon, a wonderful interplay between the Irish full-back and Raul Jimenez played Doherty into the box, the former Bohemians man finishing well beyond Wayne Hennessey.

The final game before the Premier League takes another break for international football, many Irish fans will feel that Doherty's impressive performances for Wolves this season are deserving of recognition from Martin O'Neill.
As yet uncapped in a competitive fixture, Doherty's preferred position of right-back does cause some issues; that being the designated position of the Irish captain, Seamus Coleman.
However, if the Wolves fans are any barometer of what Matt Doherty is capable of, today's goal only served to heighten the sense of excitement surrounding the full-back.
It is a situation that has left many Irish fans similarly wondering what it is Doherty needs to do.

Reminder that Martin O'Neill doesn't think Matt Doherty is an 'attacking' full-back. #WWFC

Matt Doherty on fire for Wolves. Another goal again today. Just wait till he rocks up for Ireland training this week and Martin O'Neill brings him crashing back down to earth. 😐

Goal from some bloke who doesn't get forward enough, at least according to Martin O'Neill. #mattdoherty #CRYWOL #COYW

I see Matt Doherty who doesn't get forward effectively according to Martin O'Neill has just scored for Wolves. @SoccRepublic

Matt Doherty could score a hat-trick and Martin O' Neill would still find a reason not to play him at right-back.
