Ever since the establishment of the Premier League back in 1992, Martin Tyler had been synonymous with Sky Sports' coverage of the division.
The commentator was a mainstay on the league's main broadcaster for over three decades, being part of a number of iconic moments along the way. However, he would step away from the role at the end of last season and be replaced by Peter Drury.
It had been assumed at the time that it was a mutual decision, with Tyler having celebrated his 78th birthday earlier this year. In saying that, it was interesting to see that he had continued his commentary career with other broadcasters since the start of the season.
We now have a clearer idea of the circumstances that led to his exit from Sky Sports.

Martin Tyler opens up on Sky Sports departure
Speaking to The Sun, Martin Tyler has revealed that his departure from Sky Sports was not his decision.
I didn't step down, I was stepped down.
I haven't retired. I'm very grateful to some channels who have decided that I've still got something to contribute.
Please don't think there's any bitterness about Sky at all, they gave me a wonderful run.
I've got many friends there, I'll be watching in the press room at the Emirates after the Arsenal-Brighton game, the coverage of Liverpool vs Manchester United and it'll bring back a lot of personal memories.
I wish everybody well.
Martin Tyler had come in for some criticism during his latter years on the channel, with some feeling he had lost the spark that made him such a top class commentator for the majority of his career.
Sky Sports clearly felt that this season was the right time to move him on as they sought to refresh their Premier League coverage.
