They may have signed James Milner today but, it hasn't all been good news for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers.

A couple of years ago, it looked like Martin Skrtel would be out the door at Anfield as soon as Rodgers had his feet under the table. However, the Slovakian has since changed his manager's mind and has become one of a few Liverpool players who look fit for purpose at the top end of the Premier League.

With that in mind it would seemingly make sense to ensure Skrtel's contract, which has only a year left to run, was sorted out pronto. Steven Gerrard is gone, Raheem Sterling is doing everything he can to escape and now another key member of Rodgers squad has made his unhappiness perfectly clear.

Speaking to Slovakian news outlet Akualne, Skrtel claimed that the offer on the table at the moment is more in line with something offered to older players or those who have 'health problems'.

It's unacceptable for me. I think that contracts like this offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.

The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens.

Given the fact that Rodgers was forced to play Emre Can, a midfielder, at centre back last year, it would seem like a good idea to sort the Skrtel situation out sooner rather than later.
