Southampton and Brighton drew 2-2 at St. Mary's on Monday night.
A late penalty for Brighton, scored by Glenn Murray, rescued a point for the away side. It was awarded after Ireland international Shane Duffy hit the turf after what appeared to be a push in the back from James Ward Prowse.
Duffy had earlier scored his second goal of the season, cutting Southampton's two-goal advantage in half, when he headed home an Anthony Knockaert free-kick.
Southampton led 2-0 via goals from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Danny Ings.
Post-match, Southampton manager Mark Hughes said that he thought the penalty awarded by referee Anthony Taylor for Duffy's tumble had been soft.
"He’s a big boy, the big centre-half, and has gone down a little bit easy and the referee’s decided that warranted a penalty decision at that late stage," said Hughes
That was a shame.
We go zonal (marking). He (Ward-Prowse) is there as a blocker, you have to block.
We're disappointed because it's a game where we should have been home and hosed long before the 92nd minute or whenever it was when they got the penalty awarded.
It was a very soft penalty and it's unfortunate that it was awarded. Those things happen and sometimes referees go with what they see in a split second.
