The English media seem consistent in their reporting of the fee that Manchester United paid Bayern Munich for a player their fans used to refer to as Die Fußballgott (The Football God), but conflicting reports in Germany are now claiming that they are way off the mark.
If you've been watching Sky Sports News and their "In's & Out's" sidebar that usually occupies the screen, or read pretty much any of the reports that emerged after the deal was confirmed, you would think that Schweinsteiger cost United £15m, but German publication Bild are claiming that the figure is much less than that.
Bild believe that the deal cost a total of £6.3m, which if true is an absolute bargain and has to go down as one of the signings of the season. Not that 15m, was very bad, in fact it was actually a good price for a high profile but aging player compared to some of the fees flying around these days, but at less than half of that the Schweinsteiger signing represents an absolute snip for a club who's fans continually complain about inflated transfer fees.
Schweinsteiger's desire to pursue a new adventure and a lack of competition for his signature will have been the reason for such a low fee, but that won't bother Ed Woodward, who managed to pull off a rather impressive bargain by bringing the World Cup winning captain to Old Trafford.
