Football Managers And The F-Bomb: A Brief Overview

Now more than ever the role of football manager is as much about maintaining positive public relations as it is about coaching a group of players.

The modern manager must put forth a clean cut image of calmness and authority and as a result, the foul mouthed rant has become as rare as hen's teeth. But dig into interviews, press-conferences and dressing room footage you will find brief glimpses of managers, letting their guard down and dropping some choice words. Here are eight of the most memorable instances of managers effing and jeffing.

1. Jurgen Klopp

Surprisingly Klopp has somehow managed to spin his tendency for the odd profanity into a loveable, quirky tic. Probably because any time he curses it's more like a casual conversation rather than a ill-advised broadside, though he has been guilty of those as well:

2. Roy Hodgson

Usually affable and courteous in the face of difficulty Roy Hodgson lost the rag spectacularly after being asked about a controversial decision after West Brom's victory over Bolton. The To be fair to Hodgson, if I was a manager I would eventually get tired of the countless leading questions journalists feed managers every day, especially when those questions are about a decisions that have gone against your team.

3. Joe Kinnear

Joe Kinnear's expletive laden tirade against a couple of tabloid journalists is a sustained exercise in the art of excessive profanity, swearing a total of 52 times the former Ireland international railed against journalists for questioning his decision to give his players a day off on the first day of his job.

4. Harry Redknapp

'Arry takes exception to Geoff Shreeves relatively innocuous remark about being a 'wheeler dealer', leaving the interview early in protest, telling Shreeves 'I'm not a wheeler and dealer... fack off'. Something about the way Redknapp dismisses Shreeves makes him seem like even more of a wheeler dealer. I think it's the cockney accent, though it's hard to take the former Spurs manager when he's best known for conducting interviews out of a car on transfer deadline day.

5. Neil Warnock

Warnock has quite the highlight reel of various colourful episodes and we will hopefully be excusing his French next season in the Premier League. Fresh off of winning Championship manager of the season, Warnock has lost none of his fire as evidenced by his recent spat with Wolves' coach Nuno Esprito Santo:

6. John Sitton

The piece de resistance of sweary manager rants. This iconic video taken during Leyton Orient's disastrous 1994/95 season in which they were relegated.

Though the video has seen Sitton become a punchline, the documentary which the clip is taken from, Club For A Fiver, paints a more forgiving picture of the coach as he struggles to save Orient from relegation amid the club's financial struggles.

Notable mentions

Though diverting from the managerial theme these two instances are none the less entertaining, Drogba's for the sheer global reach of his meltdown and Dunphy... well just because it's Dunphy:
