Wayne Rooney said goodbye to Manchester United today after 13 years, 11 titles, and Bobby Charlton's supposedly untouchable goalscoring record broken.
It had been on the cards for a while, but as Rooney pulled on an Everton shirt to officially confirm his return to Goodison Park it would still have felt strange seeing him in anything other than the red of Man Utd.
With Michael Carrick expected to take over the captain's armband, and Romelu Lukaku expected to take his #10 shirt, Rooney's locker has been cleared out at Old Trafford and all that was left for him to do was say goodbye, which he did with a message on Instagram.
With his former teammates on a plane to LA, only a handful paid for the on-board wifi to publicly thank their skipper for all that he had done, with Ander Herrera once again finding the right thing to say to make Man Utd fans swoon.
There were also comments from Jesse Lingard, Antonio Valencia, and youngster Angel Gomes.
One day I will be able to tell my grandkids I played with you. All the best and thank you @WayneRooney #FarewellToALegend pic.twitter.com/QZS6OhDTcP
