I'm always hesitant to pay any heed to tranfer rumours involving the big clubs during the January window, given the trend of them rarely signing anyone major but seeing as United are so short on attacking power it's hard to think they won't actually make a move for at least one striker.
The Guardian are in fact reporting two players as being on Van Gaal's radar. The first comes as no surprise, as it's Southampton's Sadio Mane, who was of course strongly linked with joining back in August. However their report offers the caveat that they may wait until the end of the season until moving in for him again.
A much more likely option is a man who's being linked with United in various papers. Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto. The Mainz forward turned down an offer to join Chelsea when leaving FC Tokyo last season due to worries over first team opportunities but given United's attacking woes then he may not have such fear when considering a move to Old Trafford.
The Mirror are saying that they are prepared to pay £10m for the striker, who has scored seven goals in 14 games since joining the Maine in May.
