A report has emerged from Miguel Delaney at ESPN FC which suggests that there is a possibility of Manchester United making a splash in the January transfer window, despite manager Louis Van Gaal's insistence that new additions are not a priority.
Manchester United fans will have seen links with Cavani and rolled their eyes, as much like Wesley Sneijder and Nico Gaitan, his is a name that never fails to pop-up during a transfer window, but this time it is believed to be a little different, as the Uruguayan's representatives are the ones who are said to have initiated contact.
It's clear that Man Utd need more bodies in attacking positions, and ESPN's sources have told them that Cavani knows this and is "extremely keen" on making the move to Manchester:
Manchester United are contemplating an official bid for Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani, sources have told ESPN FC, with the Uruguayan striker extremely keen on a move to Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old's representatives initiated the contact with the Old Trafford hierarchy, hoping to rekindle United's previous interest in the player, and there is an increasing feeling at the Premier League club that he may provide a solution to their striking problems.
Ed Woodward is believed to be a long-time admirer of Cavani, much to the despair of Manchester United fans who feared that an eye-watering bid for the former Napoli striker was on the cards in the last two summer windows, but if Cavani is the one seeking out a discussion, then surely the fee would not be as high as previously reported.
In terms of fitting into the side, Cavani would surely insist on being played as a true striker, as it is quite clear that he is unhappy with his role out wide for PSG, where Zlatan Ibrahimovic commands the central striker's role. Perhaps with Anthony Martial on one wing, and Wayne Rooney in behind, Cavani could return to the form that saw the Parisian club shell out €64m for him in 2013.
Then again his form, at least in terms of statistics, has not been that bad as Cavani has netted 69 times in 120 games, but a number of high profile misses in big games, plus his frustration at being played out of position, have seen him struggle with confidence.
If the price was reasonable, he would definitely be worth a punt under normal circumstances, but Louis Van Gaal's uncertain future makes this a difficult deal for both player and club. We'll bring you any further developments on this story that emerge in the coming days.
