Jason McAteer sealed his fate in Irish football folklore when he scored that incredible goal that sent Ireland to the 2002 World Cup. However, the former Liverpool midfielder sent a tweet today that is sure to cause a stir.
McAteer proclaimed that he was impressed by the plans for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The tournament has been at the centre of several controversies including migrant workers dying during the construction of infrastructure for the World cup which, is also costing the state billions to build. Qatar has also been lambasted for its archaic attitudes towards women and its oppressive stance on homosexuality.
This has left Twitter users and sports fans alike scratching their heads over McAteer's comment. To cap it all off, he tagged himself in his own tweet, which is an unforgivable social media faux pas.
@MCATEER4: Just been shown around Qatar's WC plans for 2022. Looks amazing it definitely will be the greatest show on earth #WorldCup
