Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has apologised after pictures emerged of him leaving Anfield before the beginning of yesterday's Merseyside derby.

It is understood that Sakho was unhappy at having been left out of the team to face Everton and he chose to leave the stadium rather than take his place alongside his teammates.

Sakho's time at Anfield hasn't exactly been a success since an £18 million move from PSG last summer. He has been accused of having a rather unnerving disposition while in possession of the ball and together with Dejan Lovren he has come in for quite a bit of early season criticism.

In his column in the Daily Mail before the Merseyside derby, Jamie Carragher argued that the form shown by the central defensive pairing doesn't bode well for their future at Anfield.

I know it’s early days but, when you have spent £38m on defenders like Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho, you don’t want to be hearing about settling in. You want instant results but Liverpool are shipping goals.

Lovren was brought in to add leadership at the back but Liverpool actually look worse defensively than they did last season. Sakho doesn’t fill you with confidence when you watch him and nor does the goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet. They need to step it up urgently.
