Luke Shaw's Manchester United career looks to be in serious doubt following heavy criticism by manager Jose Mourinho.
The England international has not played since a draw against Bournemouth last month, and Mourinho told the Manchester Evening News that Shaw is undeserving of a place on the bench owing to his attitude in training. 20-year-old reserve midfielder Matthew Willock was selected in yesterday's matchday squad ahead of Shaw.
There are some pretty remarkable details in the MEN's story, including a line which claims that " it is understood Mourinho rebuked him for speaking to Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings".
The line in the report preceding the quoting of Mourinho made even less comfortable reading for the full-back:
When asked what Shaw had to do to return to the squad, Mourinho replied: "Who?"
Mourinho then explained why a return for Shaw is some way away:
Luke Shaw? It’s difficult for him to be on the bench because I cannot compare him with Ashley Young, with Darmian, with Blind.
I cannot compare the way he trains, the way he commits, the focus, the ambition. I cannot compare. He is a long way behind.
Shaw did take part in a five-a-side training session on the Old Trafford pitch along with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the West Brom game, although he is unlikely to be restored to the squad for the home game with Everton on Tuesday.
There was a withering killer line by Mourinho on Shaw, too. When it was pointed out to the manager that Shaw is an England international, here's how he responded:
Joe Hart is an English international and is playing on loan in Italy.
