Jimmy Bullard says he was paid too much money by Hull City. Or so he told the Hull supporters podcast 'The Magic Sponge'.
However, these comments were not made as part of some self-flagellating bout of moralistic commentary on the iniquity of Premier League footballers being paid 'silly money'.
Rather he merely recalls, with no small measure of glee, that Hull City ended up paying him more than they intended due to a misprint on the contract.
They had disclosed that they wished to pay him £40,000, a sum with which he was wholly satisfied.
When he found that Hull officials had placed the wrong numbers beside the pound sign, Jimmy, on the urgent advice of his agent and his father, opted not to alert the club to their error.
I was doing my contract with my dad but I had my agent there.
We had the chat before with the club, he’s obviously gone away to talk to the club, and the contract was £40,000 a week. And I was like ‘yeah, blinding contract, let’s sign it'.
I’ve gone to sign it, I see on the paperwork it says £50,000. So I’ve passed it under the table to my agent, my agent’s gone: ‘Yeah, that’s a misprint, sign it.’
As I’ve signed it, I blew it dry, and then I read under it as well, another £5,000 or £6,000 per appearance, whatever it was. And he’s said: ‘Yeah, just sign it, just sign it’, and I blew that dry (too).
This club is chucking it away like confetti, that’s a joke. So I was on £55,000 a week from £40,000.
Amazing contract, amazing. And I’m celebrating to this f**king day!
Thank you Hull City, for changing my life. I’m dropping cash everywhere, I’m bleeding cash.
This planet could do with more employers in the mould of those running things at Hull City.
