Following United's Manchester derby clash with City, a triumphant Van Gaal partly claimed credit for Liverpool's collapse against Southampton earlier that afternoon. He did so in his post-game interview with Sky Sports, which you can watch below:

While it was a way of Van Gaal declaring how proud he was of his team, it also worked well as a way of kicking Liverpool while they were down. It also works as a riposte to Jurgen Klopp, who revelled in knocking United out of the Europa League by wearing a Beatles t-shirt to his press conference the following day. We assume he would not have worn a Smiths t-shirt had Liverpool lost.
Only Jurgen Klopp would turn up to a press conference in a Beatles t-shirt. A legend band for a legend man! #LFC pic.twitter.com/R0HeEzfdYt

Jurgen Klopp wearing a Beatles t-shirt for his press conference. Plus other clothes, thankfully.

Since Van Gaal has had few victories to cheer this season, we will permit him finding as many reasons to be cheerful as we can.
