Following the departure of Robin van Persie, Man Utd are possibly a little bit short in the striker department heading into the new season.
Manager Louis van Gaal has already spoken this week about the need to strengthen in 'two positions'.
At the press conference after Man Utd's 1-0 win against Club America in their opening pre-season friendly, van Gaal acknowledged that he might yet sign a 'surprise striker'.
I am not worried about depth of forwards. We still have Rooney. He can play in the striker's position.
We also have Chicharito (Javier Hernandez), (James) Wilson and maybe a surprise, you never know. It is a process. I am not worried about that position.
The club were last night linked with Barcelona player Pedro in a move that could cost £22m.
It seems unlikely however that this is the surprise to which the Dutchman refers, the Spaniard would certainly be regarded as more of a wide player than a central striker.
