For all the wrong reasons, Saturday night in Kiev is one Lorius Karius will neither forget or be allowed forget for the remainder of his football career and probably life.

The 24-year-old German keeper was at fault for two Real Madrid goals - he could have done nothing to stop Gareth Bale's spectacular overhead kick - as the Spanish side defeated Liverpool 3-1 to claim their third consecutive Champions League title.

Just over five minutes after the break, the score 0-0 at the time, Karius did not just lay an opportunity on a plate for Karim Benzema, he also chopped it into tiny bite-sized pieces when he inexplicably threw the ball directly at the French striker's foot.

Liverpool 2-1 down with under 10 minutes to play - and the game still up for grabs - a jittery Karius allowed a Gareth Bale strike to slip through his grasp and into the net.

"It just moved around a lot - I tried to catch it," Karius told Talksport after the game.

"Maybe I just should have just done it safer and tried to put it out of play instead of trying to catch it. Yeah, I judged it a bit wrong and it went in."

He acknowledged that his mistakes cost Liverpool the game.

I don’t feel anything right now. Today I lost my team the game. I feel sorry for everyone. I’m sorry for everyone, for the team, for the whole club. The mistakes cost us dearly.

If I could go back in time I would. I just feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down today. It is very hard right now, but that is the life of a goalkeeper. You have got to get your head up again.

For now, I’m just really sorry for everyone that those goals cost us the title basically.

Karius also gave a taste of what it was like in the Liverpool dressing room after the final whistle.

"Of course, everyone tried to cheer me up. There was just silence everywhere because everyone was really disappointed. It will take us a bit to get over that, of course."
