The 33-year-old also removed the description "Chelsea and England left back" from his Twitter bio. His contract with the Blues comes to an end next month and despite an apparent offer of an extension from José Mourinho, he seems set to leave West London.

Before last night's apparent farewell message, his most recent tweets had been his equally emoticon-laden messages on May 11 which announced his international retirement after he was left out of Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.
