Paolo Di Canio became a folk hero to Celtic during the 1996-97 season for his dazzling performances, his goalscoring and his confrontational behaviour towards certain Rangers stalwarts, notably Ian Ferguson, during an Old Firm derby. He was only stay one year at the club after demanding and not receiving a large wage increase.
Unbowed by his disastrous and somewhat surreal spell at Sunderland, he has now indicated his openness towards taking the Celtic job.
Di Canio's UK representative Phil Spencer told reporters:
Paolo would be keen to speak to Celtic. He played for the club and he certainly has a good relationship with the fans. There has been no contact between Paolo and the club. But if there was, it’s something he would consider.
