Steven Gerrard turns 35 next year. His decline is already noticeable. He was omitted from the Liverpool starting line-up for the game against Stoke last month. The match that marked the 16-year anniversary of his debut for the club.
So it makes sense that the Anfield side are lining up possible replacements. Today's rumoured transfer target is very much underwhelming though.
According to The Daily Mirror today, Liverpool "head the race" for Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph.
The recently capped England midfielder is 25 and was brought to Villa from Leeds by Martin O'Neill four and a half years ago, costing the club £8 million.
He's out of contract this summer and rather than lose him for nothing, Paul Lambert may choose to cash in on him in January.
These kind of cut-price, bargain deals are hardly the kind of transfers which will inspire Liverpool fans.
