While Caoimhín Kelleher has made 11 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season, there is a sense that he needs to move on from the club in order to take his game to the next level.

Now 25-years old, he has yet to have a sustained run of first team football up to this point in his career. With Alisson Becker one of the best goalkeepers in the world and still having plenty left in the tank, you would imagine that it is unlikely that such an opportunity will be forthcoming at Anfield.

Kelleher was heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool last summer, although Jurgen Klopp was hesitant to lose his no.2. He said at the time that it would take an 'extraordinary' offer in order for the player to be sold, one that ultimately did not arrive.

However, the latest Liverpool transfer rumour indicates that the club are perhaps softening on this stance.

Mail Sport are reporting that Liverpool are closely monitoring Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson ahead of a potential move for the players this summer. Apparently, the 23-year old is being lined up in order to prepare for the departure of Caoimhín Kelleher.

Patterson came through the ranks at Sunderland and has acted as the club's first choice goalkeeper for the last few seasons. He has also been capped by England at U21 level.

Liverpool pursuing other goalkeeping options surely means that they are open to selling Caoimhín Kelleher this summer, with the player desperately needing a move at this point in his career.

The Cork native is likely to see a bit of playing time over the coming months, acting as the club's first choice goalkeeper in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League. Liverpool are the favourites to win both competitions. Two trophy winning campaigns would no doubt be the ideal sendoff for a player that first arrived on Merseyside back in 2015.

There would no doubt be quite a bit of interest in his services at the end of the season, with Liverpool reportedly seeking a fee of around £20million.

It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the coming months.
