Liverpool Linked With Shock Move For Championship Midfielder

It has hardly been an ideal start to the season for Liverpool.

Having convincingly defeated Manchester City in the Community Shield, hopes were high that the club were primed to hit the ground running in the Premier League. The reality has been far different.

They were thoroughly unimpressive in their opening fixture against Fulham, being a tad fortunate to emerge from Craven Cottage with a point. The draw against Crystal Palace on Monday evening was a better performance, although they still lacked that clinical edge in front of goal as Darwin Nunez was stupidly sent off.

Midfield is certainly an area of concern. Many felt they were entering the season a bit light in that area, a point that has only been driven home after injuries to Thiago, Akex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita early in the campaign. That trio have had plenty of fitness issues over the last couple of seasons, adding to the argument that another midfielder is required.

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that such a move is unlikely, although one potential option has emerged.

Liverpool linked with move for Sander Berge

Sky Sports reported Gary Weaver is reporting that Liverpool have showed an interest in signing Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge in recent weeks.

Despite being confined to the Championship last season, the Norwegian is a highly rated prospect. It was seen as a major coupe for Sheffield United when they managed to sign him from Genk for a fee of over £20million in January of 2020.

He made 31 appearances in the second flight last season despite some injury issues, while he has already scored twice in four appearances since the start of the new campaign.

Liverpool have been credited with an interested in Berge in the past, and at 24-years old, he still has plenty of room for improvement.

The midfielder supposedly has a £35million release clause in his contract, while Belgian side Club Brugge recently had a £12.5million bid for his services rejected. Speaking in recent days, Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom admitted they could lose the player this summer.

If Sander continues scoring every game and does this, that and the other, then someone is probably going to pay the number that I don’t want them to pay. But then there would be nothing we can do about it.

He has played Champions League and we have signed him for a lot of money and he wanted to come here and play in the Premier League, above others.

Sander Berge has earned 30 caps for Norway since making his debut in 2017.

While this would not be the high priced deal some Liverpool fans are hoping for, it would add depth to the midfield and should be one that the club could get over the line should they wish to pursue it.

It's one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
