Liverpool will reportedly strengthen their central midfield during the January transfer window, with a former Manchester United target and Portuguese international reported to be in talks regarding a move to Anfield.
According to Portugese football newspaper A Bola, Liverpool representatives are in Lisbon with a view to recruiting Sporting CP's 24-year-old holding midfielder William Carvalho.
A Bola reports that Atlético Madrid are also in for the Angolan-born tackler, but Liverpool have "sent emissaries to Portugal in order to try to convince Bruno de Carvalho to release the player".
Liverpool are reportedly the only British club in for Carvalho, who in the past had seemed likely to move to Manchester United.
A Bola write that Sporting value Carvalho at £30m, but Liverpool are currently trying to drive his price down.
But Sporting manager Jorge Jesus, who replaced current Hull City boss Marco Silva in farcical circumstances back in 2015, has Bruno Paulista and Radosav Petrovic at his disposal in Carvalho's position, and the recent emergence of 21-year-old talent João Palhinha from Sporting's academy may provide a safety net in his midfield should Carvalho depart for Anfield.
