The Glorious Line-Ups From The Last Time Leeds Played Liverpool At Anfield

The League Cup draw threw up a few solid-looking quarter finals tonight, with the pick of them all being the Harry Kewell Derby: Liverpool vs Leeds United at Anfield. (One reader got in touch with us to suggest that this is, in fact, the Robbie Keane derby, but there's a lot of competition there. We suggest it is one game in the Robbie Keane Derby Invitational).

In terms of the Liverpool record against Leeds: the sides last clashed in a League Cup 3rd round game at Elland Road in 2009, when David N'Gog scored the only goal to allow Liverpool progress.

This, however, will be Leeds' first trip to Anfield since October 2003, the glorious days when the Premier League was the Premiership and highlights were early on a Saturday evening on RTE.

Prepare to take a trip down memory lane with the team-sheets from that game. Liverpool won the game 3-1, through goals from Michael Owen, Danny Murphy, and Florent Sinama Pongolle. Alan Smith had equalised for Leeds before half-time. Here are the respective line-ups, beginning with Liverpool.

Jerzey Dudek; Steve Finnan, Igor Biscan, Sami Hyypia, John Arne-Riise; El-Hadji Diouf, Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer, Harry Kewell; Emile Heskey, Michael Owen

Subs used: Danny Murphy for Smicer, Florent Sinama-Pongolle for Owen, Anthony Le Tallec for Kewell.

It was Pongolle's first Liverpool goal, for those of you interested in landmark occasions.

That day marked the last of the great Leeds teams. Here's their line-up, which included one James Milner:

Paul Robinson; Gary Kelly, Saloman Olembe, David Batty, Dominic Matteo; Zoumana Camara, Jermaine Pennant, Seth Johnson, James Milner; Alan Smith, Mark Viduka.

Subs used: Lamine Sakho for Milner, Nick Barmby for Johnson, Aaron Lennon for Pennant.

Exceptional. Harry Kewell was making his first appearance against his former side, while El Hadji-Diouf would go on to have a pretty disastrous spell with Leeds. On the other side, James Milner is obviously at Liverpool currently, and Jermaine Pennant would go on to play in a European Cup final for Liverpool. Scott Carson - an unsued sub - would join Liverpool sooner, and was part of the European Cup winning squad of 2004/05.

Remarkably, somebody has uploaded a 25-minute highlight reel of that game to Youtube if you fancy watching it.
