Liverpool are set to undergo a sizeable rebuild this summer.
Having disappointed this season, it was clear that their squad had been allowed to grow stale over the last couple of seasons. That was especially true in midfield, where the club had made only one senior permanent signing since the summer of 2018.
As a result of that, they could no longer bring the trademark energy that had made them such a force during the Jurgen Klopp era. The German said before the start of the season that he had no concerns over his options in the middle third.
That confidence turned out to be misplaced.
Not only did injuries play a part, but a number of their midfielder seemed to be past their prime. As a result, some major changes are coming in the summer.
It has been said that Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, although it looks like they could miss out on another one of their targets.
PSG make move to sign Liverpool midfield target
L'Equipe are reporting that PSG have agreed personal terms with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte and look set to trigger his €60million release clause in the weeks ahead.
Ugarte has been heavily linked with Liverpool in recent times, with the likes of Chelsea and Aston Villa also in the race for his signature.
The Uruguayan is exactly the type of player Klopp is lacking. He is a mobile and tenacious midfielder, one that provides a huge amount of energy to any team he plays in. However, he is thought to be one of a number of options the Merseyside club are considering.
Liverpool have also been linked with the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Mason Mount, although the latter is now tipped for a move to Manchester United should he leave Chelsea.
Regardless of if they miss out on the likes of Ugarte and Mount, their supporters will demand that Liverpool make some major upgrades in midfield over the coming weeks.
