John W. Henry has been speaking ahead of Liverpool's tour of the US and he fielded the inevitable questions over Luis Suarez's departure from Anfield.
When asked why Suarez was sold this year as opposed to last year, he cited Liverpool's participation in the Champions League as well as the "Premeer League" as a reason for needing more depth, which Suarez' sale would no doubt help fund.
I thought we needed more depth; last year we needed more depth, and we’re playing a lot more games this year with the Champions League…
And it was really the time for us and Luis to make a break.
Henry must be commended for his cool optimism and not simply replying "he bit someone again." We also recognise that a chairman cannot throw his hands up in the air, shrieking 'we're all doomed' in the manner of Private Frazer. However, we must confess we're not quite sure we buy his excuse, although it definitely comes across worse than intended. Watch the interview below:
