Liverpool got their first victory of the new season yesterday, defeating Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield.
The home side looked electric in attack at times, creating some wonderful scoring opportunities. As well as that, summer arrivals Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai impressed on their home debuts with their passing and abilities in forward areas.
In saying that, it was also clear that there are still some issues that need resolving in this Liverpool team. The holding midfield position needs an upgrade, with Bournemouth playing through the middle third with ease at times.
The defence is also a concern. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Andy Robertson is not a natural fit in Jurgen Klopp's new system, sometimes struggling with his position in the left of a back three.
As a result, it has been said that the club would be interested in signing a left-sided centre back before the end of the transfer window. Levi Colwill was thought to be their primary target for the role, although he would go on to sign a new contract at Chelsea after returning from his loan spell at Brighton.
Another potential option has been identified, although the deal would be complicated somewhat by the player's agent.
Deal for Liverpool target complicated by agent
According to sources in the player's homeland, Liverpool are interested in signing Ecuador and Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie before the end of the summer transfer window.
A 21-year old centre back, Hincapie has been at the German club since 2021 and made 30 appearances in the Bundesliga last season. The likes of RB Leipzig and West Ham have also been linked with the player in recent times, with a fee of around £38million thought to be enough to secure his services this summer.
While Liverpool would have no issue in matching that asking price should they wish to do so, the deal could be complicated somewhat by the player's agent.
Manuel Sierra is someone the club know well, having recently dealt with him during their pursuit of Moises Caicedo, who he also represents. It was said after that deal collapsed that the agent had misled Liverpool by indicating that Caicedo would be willing to join the club were they to agree a fee with Brighton. Of course, this turned out not to be the case.
In fact, Sierra has developed a reputation in recent years as one of the most difficult agents to deal with in the game, making outrageous and often erratic demands when it comes to his clients.
His presence could make a potential deal for Piero Hincapie a more complicated one for Liverpool, who might want to avoid the potential headaches that dealing with his agent could bring.
In saying that, if they are desperate enough to sign the player, you would imagine that they could work something out.
With a defensive midfielder also on the agenda before the end of the transfer window, it will be an interesting couple of weeks ahead for Liverpool.
