While some of their key players have been short of form in various parts of the pitch, there is no doubt that many of Liverpool's issues this season are stemming from their deficiencies in the midfield.
It is an area where many thought they would strengthen over the summer, although they largely failed to do so. Injuries then became an issue early in the campaign, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chaberlain, and Jordan Henderson all going through spells on the sideline.
It is clear that the Premier League club will need a major overhaul in that position moving forward, with many of their current midfielders either getting on in years or coming towards the end of their time at the club.
Jude Bellingham is thought to be their main target for the summer of 2023, although it is unlikely that he will be the only recruit in that position.
Liverpool target confirms desire to play for club
One name that has been mentioned is Joao Gomes.
The 21-year old plays for Brazilian club Flamengo, making quite the impression since breaking into their team in 2020. He has attracted the attentions of a number of European clubs, with Liverpool the strongest linked.
During a recent Instagram live, he confirmed his desire to play for the Merseyside club.
Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play.
Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.
More of a holding midfielder, Gomes is known for his ball-winning abilities. That would be a desirable trait for Liverpool, who have far too often been easily bypassed in the middle third this season.
He can also pick out a pass and advance possession with the ball at his feet, being among the best players in the Brazilian top flight in both of those areas according to WhoScored.
It remains to be seen when or if Liverpool will make a move for the player, although it has been suggested that they could be in the market for a midfielder in January ahead of some larger moves the following summer.
