After announcing earlier in the summer that Jordan Henderson would be Liverpool's new club captain following the departure of Steven Gerrard, there was quite a mixed reaction on social media from the club's fans.
While most were happy to reward Henderson for his improvement on the pitch and his clear passion for the cause, some were a bit underwhelmed following the reign of such an iconic captain in Gerrard.
Today, Henderson's vice-captain was announced, and the reaction has been met with surprise for many of the Anfield faithful.
Brendan Rodgers confirms James Milner has been appointed #LFC's vice-captain this season. More to follow on http://t.co/Cy0neOss59

New signing James Milner must already be leading by example in the changing room as Brendan Rodgers has decided to appoint him as club vice captain just eight weeks or so after he was unveiled as a Liverpool player.
The first name on the lips of those who are questioning the appointment appears to be Martin Skrtel, who was linked with a move away from the club, but will be starting in defence for them this season.
@LFC should be Skrtel.

@TimHampsonLFC @LFC there's no reason why Milner should get it.
Took Henderson years to get vice, took Milner a few pre season games ??

However it should be noted that not all Liverpool fans are against the decision:
@LFC he deserves it for having such a beautiful defined jawline

Jamie Carragher mentioned when Milner signed that he has the leadership qualities to become Liverpool's captain, so it may not be surprising to him, and often players who have been around the Premier League for a long time are given leadership roles at their new clubs, such as Darren Fletcher at West Brom, so it's clear that Rodgers is backing Milner to be a big hit on Merseyside.
