With Arne Slot set to begin his duties as Liverpool manager this week, it is likely that the club will be looking to make some progress in the transfer market over the coming weeks.

The Dutchman has inherited a squad that is not in need of a major overhaul, with Jurgen Klopp having refreshed a number of key positions over the last couple of seasons. In saying that, you get the sense that the club will look to upgrade in one or two spots during the summer transfer window.

A holding midfielder will likely be high on the priority list for Liverpool, with the first team squad lacking depth in that position. A centre back will also be on the agenda after the departure of Joel Matip.

One option at the back has now emerged and it happens to be one of the breakout stars of Euro 2024.

The Athletic are reporting that Liverpool have enquired about Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori with a view to signing the player this summer.

The 22-year old experienced a breakout campaign with Bologna in Serie A during the 2023/24 season, helping the club to Champions League qualification. He was called up to the Italy squad for the first time last month, going on to shine in their Euro 2024 opener against Albania.

A talented left-footed centre back, Calafiori excels with the ball at his feet and is widely regarded as the next top defender to emerge from Italian football. He is also capable of operating at left back.

The player is also said to be of interest to the likes of Newcastle and Brighton, although Bologna are keen to retain his services this summer. However, his future is up in the air after former manager Thiago Motta left for Juventus in recent weeks.

Should he continue to shine at Euro 2024, it is likely that that the club could command a higher fee should they sell him over the coming months.

From a Liverpool point of view, his age and skillset make him seem like an ideal signing to kick off the Arne Slot era.
