History repeating itself as farce, and all that.
Earlier today, Marcus Rashford took a dive to earn his side a penalty, that ultimately failed to ensure a vital victory in the pursuit of a place in the Champions League next season.
A couple of hours later, Leroy Sané repeated the trick for Manchester City, to earn them an equaliser away to Manchester City. It came through a penalty, converted by Sergio Aguero. In terms of describing how he earned it, had Sané been English it would have been described as Sané "initiating the contact". He's not English, though, so he dived.
Here it is.
Leroy Sané Dive
And like Rashford, Sane's dive was not enough for victory. City had fallen behind in the first half to Alvaro Negredo, with the Leroy Sané dive getting the game back to 1-1. They then fell behind again, through Calum Chambers. Gabriel Jesus made it 2-2 with ten minutes to go, but despite a late onslaught - featuring ambient howls of derision in the direction of Sané - they failed to force a breakthrough.
It means that City remain fourth, with 66 points, level on points but one place behind Liverpool, who have now played the same number of games as Guardiola's team. City are now just a single point clear of United in fifth, and Arsenal are hovering with intent in sixth spot: they are six points behind, but have two games in hand.
