There are some names in football that are almost universally loved. Gianluigi Buffon is certainly one of them.

The Italian legend is one of the most well-liked players in the sport, having won the hearts of many a fan during his 24-year career. He is one of the best goalkeepers of all time, having won almost every honour in the game.

Buffon left PSG at the end of last season, and despite being 41-years old, he has decided not to hang up his gloves quite yet. He is currently on the lookout for a new club, and he has been linked with an incredibly surprising move.

Italian outlet Corriere della Sera are reporting that Leeds United are interested in signing the former Juventus player, as they seek to sure up their goalkeeping options ahead of another promotion push next season.

The player will have other options , with Atalanta, Porto, as well as a return to Parma, all on the table.

Leeds of course came agonisingly close to sealing a return to the Premier League last season, only for a dramatic dip in form late in the campaign to cost them automatic promotion. They would then go on to squander a first leg lead at home to Derby County in the play-offs.

A large reason for that collapse was goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, who was very unassured throughout the final weeks of the season. This has resulted to consider potential alternatives, of which Buffon is apparently one.

While he is no longer at the peak of his powers, this would be a major coup for the club. His larger than life personality and vast experience would be an unbelievable asset in the dressing room, and he is still more than capable of playing at that level.

Whether the player himself would consider the move is an altogether different matter, but we are certainly rooting for it to happen...
