A new documentary about out of contract League of Ireland footballers will air on eir Sport on June 29th.
'Out Of Their League' has been made by Craig Speer and focuses on a group of players during a PFAI winter training camp.
This year the @PFAIOfficial started a training camp for players in the west of Ireland for the first time, where we met @Schling1Slaz and Jesse Devers, with coach John Russell.
It's been amazing the openness of everyone involved in Irish football to help tell this story.— Craig Speer (@Craig_Speer) June 15, 2020
"In Ireland, many of our League of Ireland footballers are only on one-year contracts, and for the most part that contract is for 42 weeks," say the documentary's makers.
"So as the season ends in October the majority of our young football players are out of contract and out of work. Each winter the PFAI run a winter training camp for the players culminating in two trial matches where managers from the league come and pick up their final players ahead of pre-season.
"Shot over 6 weeks, the documentary follows some of the players on their journeys, delving into the backstories of these young men exploring how through bad luck, injuries or loss of form they have ended up on the football scrapheap."
I spent last winter following the @PFAIOfficial Training Camp for out of contract footballers. It's tough being a footballer in Ireland, often for reasons out of the players' control. Here's a glimpse at the documentary that airs on the 29th of June on @eirSport @ 8pm. pic.twitter.com/P1MGB0JPXi
