Only a few days ago, Kylian Mbappe being in a PSG jersey next season seemed like a pipe-dream for the French champions.
The 23-year old had reportedly long harboured ambitions of playing for Real Madrid, with a move to the Spanish giants always seeming likely after his contract expired this summer. It was thought that the two parties had agreed a deal earlier this week, with an announcement pending.
However, there was to be a late twist in the tale. News emerged over the last 24 hours that Mbappe would instead be staying in Paris.
It is not difficult to see why he performed this late u-turn. Reports claim that the Frenchman is set to earn an annual net salary of up to €100million over the course of the three-year contract, as well as a signing on bonus that would eclipse his yearly earnings. It has also been suggested that the forward will be given a decisive say in areas such as coaching appointments and the club's transfer policy.
Real Madrid will certainly feel stung by Mbappe's decision, having long been convinced he would be on his way to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. It is also a blow to La Liga as a whole, with the league currently well short on the star power it possessed during the height of the rivalry between the El Clasico clubs in the 2010s.
In fact, it appears the league's officials are not happy with the way PSG have conducted this deal.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has accused PSG of destroying football with the finances involved in Kylian Mbappe's new contract, saying PSG are as dangerous to the future of football as the infamous European Super League.

Financial Fair Play has certainly been made a mockery of in this deal, while many of Europe's biggest clubs will worry about the precedent it will set when it comes to securing future deals with the top players in the game.
As for Real Madrid, they will now have to reconfigure their transfer plans for the upcoming window.
