Back in the 1960s, footballers used to celebrate a title win by lifting the cup, cheering a bit and then handing it to one of the directors. It would be shoved in the bonnet of said director's car until it had to be handed back. In the GAA, meanwhile, players used to forget the cup in a rush to get back to the farm.
Celebrating titles has come a long way. Hence, the fabled 'champagne slip and slide'. Both a waste of good champagne and something that resembles an future Olympic sport, the champagne slip 'n slide is now de riguer in the opulent American League. LA Galaxy indulged in it after claiming the MLS title last night.
It's the kind of thing Wall Street bankers would have engaged in after collecting their bonuses, circa 2004. They are the 1%.
