Kyle Walker, up-and-coming star at Tottenham Hotspur was kind enough to speak to Balls.ie at the launch of the FIFA 13 Demo for Irish exclusive interview on the eve of Spurs' match away to Reading today about his breakout season last year, the changes at White Hart Lane, and who gets Spurs when he and Kyle Naughton play FIFA.
How’s is the transformation of Spurs going under Andre Villas-Boas?
Tactically, AVB’s really good. It’s just a matter of time before the results starting going our way. For us. I think it’s just about seeing out the whole 90 minutes. We’ve given up two late goals, 85th and 86th minute. We’ve got to see the whole game out. It’s think it’s all positive from here. I’m confident the results are going to start going our way.
How was the international week with England?
It was a great week. Obviously I was disappointed to miss out on the Euros [with the toe injury]. At the moment I’m just trying to learn as much as I can from Glen Johnson. He’s an outstanding right back. So I’m just trying to learn as much as I can and wait for moment.
You’ve achieved a lot in a really short amount of time. After so much success last season, do you ever have to pull yourself and say ‘wow’?
Yeah it’s been a whirlwind. In just a season I’ve achieved so much of I want. But every now and again step back and pinch myself and take a deep breath.
From looking at your Twitter feed, it seems like you play a bit of FIFA? How does that work?
Yep, me and Kyle Naughton came down from Sheffield together and we play FIFA against eacy other a lot. We have a rule where neither of us is allowed to be Spurs. We have to be other team, usually we’re just Premier League teams. We play FIFA 12 and we’ll play FIFA 13 as soon as it’s available.
Most non-Spurs fans who play fantasy football will know for your incredible Dream Team season last year. Do you play fantasy football?
I don’t play fantasy football. I try just to concentrate on my real game. Some of my friends play and they tell me I’ve been doing really well. I try to score them a few points but my focus is on my game.
Footballers might get a bad rap from some sectors of the media, but you seem like part of a generation who understands how much of a privilege it is to play sport for a living?
Yeah, you know we work hard, we’re normal 9-5 people. I can’t really complain about playing football for a living, but a lot has been sacrificed along the way. I signed a new contract with Spurs and I see my future with the club.
