If anyone watched the latest episode of HBO's The Newsroom, it seems poignant today after Twitter speculation went out of control following an incident at the Irish team hotel last night. Although there has been plenty of coverage of the altercation, in truth we know little for definite.

Here's a breakdown of what happened as far as we're aware:

  • There was an altercation between a person of the public and a member of the Ireland camp at the Portmarnock Hotel.
  • Keane called the Gardaí after the incident.
  • No arrest has been made, with a Gardaí spokesperson saying 'Gardai are investigating an incident which occurred at a hotel in Portmarnock in the late afternoon.'
  • No complaint has been lodged to the Gardaí from either party.
  • The FAI and Martin O'Neill have given Keane their full backing.

This member of the Ireland camp is widely reported to have been Roy Keane. Further to this, the Irish Independent are today reporting that the person had a history with Keane and the altercation occurred after Keane refused to sign a copy of his autobiography. However this has not been confirmed by any official source.

The FAI released a statement late last night saying:

Following inaccurate media reports which refer to an incident involving a member of the public this evening at the Republic of Ireland team hotel, we wish to clarify that Roy Keane called the Gardai following the incident.

The manager, Martin O’Neill and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the Assistant Manager has their full support.

This ain't over.
